    Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a true landscape show-stopper with year-round interest. This popular flowering, deciduous multi-trunk magnolia tree adds timeless beauty to the California landscape. In early spring, the spectacular pink tulip-shaped buds open wide to reveal large, white-blushed, saucer-shaped, fragrant flowers on bare branches. The rounded growth habit and size of the Saucer Magnolia make it an excellent shade tree or large shrub, serving as a focal point in the landscape.

Also known as Tulip Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia, Magnolia x soulangeana (sometimes spelled soulangiana) is a moderately growing deciduous tree that reaches 20 to 25 ft. tall and wide. Bright green leaves emerge after the flowering period and mature to a lush dark green by summer. In the fall, the foliage turns golden brown before being shed, revealing the Saucer Magnolia’s silvery-gray bark. Under optimal conditions, it grows 1-2 ft./year.

    Plant Care

Planting: Saucer Magnolia trees thrive in moist, well-drained acidic soil. Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Protect from harsh sun in hot regions and provide shelter from cold, dry winds and late frosts as they may damage buds and flowers.

Watering: Water regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist, but not soggy, until the roots are well-established (typically one to two years, depending on soil and climate conditions). Once established, adjust the watering frequency as needed, keeping in mind that they prefer moist, well-drained soils. Applying a rich organic mulch around the base of the tree will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.

Pruning: Requires minimal maintenance. Prune as needed to remove damaged or overgrown branches or to maintain the desired shape.

Winter Hardiness: Hardy to -15°F, and grows best in USDA zones 5-9. Magnolia x soulangeana can be grown with extra care in zone 10.
