Planting - European Birch trees thrive in cool, moist soils. Their shallow root system makes them sensitive to hot and dry soils. Plant the European White Birch in full sun, in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight with moist, well-draining, rich, fertile soil.

When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the container and as deep as the root ball. Ensure the trunk is vertical before backfilling with soil. Apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, shredded bark, or Gromulch 2-in-1 Planting Mix & Mulch, around the base to keep the root zone cool and moist. Avoid direct contact with the trunk.

Watering – Newly planted trees should be watered at least three times a week for the first three months, gradually reducing to weekly waterings. Water deeply and slowly to ensure water penetrates 8 to 18 inches into the soil. Adjust the watering schedule based on environmental factors such as wind, temperature, soil type, and light intensity. Applying a top layer of mulch can help retain moisture and keep the root zone cool, but avoid piling it up against the trunk.

Pruning - The European White Birch tree generally requires little pruning. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed. If more pruning is needed for shaping, prune during the dormant season.

Winter Hardiness - Betula pendula is hardy to -15°F. It grows best in colder climates in USDA zones 2-8, but can be grown with extra care in warmer zones.
