    Description

D.D. Blanchard is a large Southern Magnolia cultivar boasting glossy dark evergreen green leaves with distinctly brown undersides and highly fragrant white flowers up to 8 inches in diameter. Beautiful and majestic, Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard' adds timeless charm to any landscape.

Reaching heights of 50 feet or more, this open-branched, pyramid-shaped, evergreen tree creates an impressive focal point while being adaptable to various soil types and resilient to urban conditions. Perfect for providing shade and aesthetic appeal, Magnolia grandiflora D.D. Blanchard is a classic beauty. Moderate growth rate, 1-2 ft./year under optimal conditions

    Plant Care

Magnolias thrive in moist, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH. They can adapt to clay, loam or sandy soils but do not tolerate soggy or poorly drained soils.

Plant your Magnolia tree in a location that receives full sun to light shade, at least 6 hours of sunlight. While Southern Magnolias prefer full sun in warm, humid climates, providing some afternoon shade in hot and dry climates can offer relief. Avoid areas prone to strong winds or sea spray to prevent damage.

Water your new magnolia tree regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, until the roots are well-established (typically one to two years, depending on soil and climate conditions). Once established, adjust the watering frequency as needed, keeping in mind that Magnolias prefer moist, well-drained soils. Applying a rich organic mulch around the base of the tree will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.

D.D. Blanchard Magnolia requires minimal maintenance. Prune as needed to remove damaged or overgrown branches, or to maintain the desired shape.

    Planting
    • Choose a location with adequate drainage.
    • Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball.
    • Add G&B Organics Planting Mix to improve soil drainage and build a strong soil environment that allows plants to reach their full potential.
    • Fill the hole with soil to the crown of the roots (careful not to bury it), ensuring that the plant is straight and secure in the ground.
    • Water deeply and thoroughly after planting.
    • Add a 2-3 inch top layer of Kellogg’s Organic Gromulch to the ground to keep the soil cool and moist while providing a slow release of nutrients over time.
    • Keep the mulch away from the base of the plant.
    • For the first year, continue to water deeply to establish an extensive root system.
