    Plant care

Planting - Japanese Maples thrive in slightly acidic, fertile, moist, and well-draining soil. For best results, use an acid planting mix, such as Gardner & Bloome Acid Planting Mix, and mix with the native soil.

Select a location with some afternoon shade and shelter from strong, drying winds. While planting in full sun can produce more vibrant fall colors, it often leads to scorched leaf margins. This sun-scorching may lessen as the tree matures.

When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the container and at the same depth as the root ball. Avoid planting too deep, as this can lead to root rot. Add a 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as Gromulch 2-in-1 Planting Mix & Mulch, around the base of your maple, ensuring it doesn't touch the trunk. Top dressing with Gromulch will help keep the soil and root zone cool and moist.

Watering - Water deeply and regularly during the first few years to help your Japanese Maple develop an extensive root system. Newly planted trees should be watered consistently, about every two days, to allow the roots to settle. Gradually reduce the frequency as needed. A layer of mulch can help retain moisture, but avoid piling it against the trunk.
During the warm summer months, water your Japanese Maple deeply and slowly at the roots to ensure maximum absorption. Reducing water in late summer can enhance the intensity of fall colors.

Fertilizing - Feed your Japanese maple tree in spring with a slow release fertilizer.

Pruning - Japanese maples are fairly low maintenance and generally do not need pruning. Prune to remove any dead or damaged branches as needed. If shaping is desired, prune in late winter, before leaf buds open, and cut only small inner branches.

Winter Hardiness - Hardy to -15°F, Japanese Maple trees thrive in USDA zones 5 to 8. With extra care, they can also be grown in zones 9 to 10.
